On the 25th February 2023, the school choir and some of the students went to perform at the music event, the Hyogo Foreign Schools Association concert.

It was the first time for us as a school choir to join a big event. We were nervous but had lots of fun, too. Our students did a great job! - Azusa.

Book and Culture Week 2023
March 13 - 16

There are many exciting activities planned for the students on the Book and Culture week celebration. 
Please find below some activities for the week. 

Students and parents may come to school wearing the different costumes for the Spirit Week! The PTA will set-up stations for the students and teachers to experience games, food, crafts, stories, dance and more from their country. If you are interested to participate, kindly let us know before the 6th of March (Monday). click here Book and Culture Week.

International Parade: 

Everyone is welcome to join the DSK International parade around Rokko Island on March 16 (Friday) from 9:30am - 10:00am. Please come to school on your national costume too! The teachers, students and PTA volunteers will convene at the yard area per class from the EY, Lower Primary, Upper Primary and will exit through the main gate. 

Onigiri Cart:

The Sawada Family (parents of Rino in Preschool) have graciously donated their onigiri burger food cart to all the students and staff of DSKI. They will park the cart outside yard gate. Your child's homeroom teacher will send a link today where you can choose the type of onigiri for your child. Kindly fill in the google form before the 8th of March. As per the schedule, you may join your child and bring a picnic mat to eat the onigiri or snack on the yard area during the 30 minutes  allotted time. 

Cultural Booth:

The PTA is still accepting items for the cultural booth set up. Kindly send it to your child's homeroom teacher.

We are looking forward to be celebrating this wonderful event with the DSKI families!

Carnival

Monday 20th February

Just a reminder that Monday is carnival day - we have a programme of games and events for all the students. Each section will take turns having their carnival starting with early years in the morning (9.15am - 10.15am), lower primary before lunch (10.45am - 11.45am) then upper primary in the afternoon (2.20pm - 3.30pm).

Please dont forget the student costumes! Students may come to school in their costume or bring it in a bag and change, we will have costume changing facilities.

Please note it will be lessons as normal when your child is not at the carnival event and swimming will be as normal in the afternoon for preschool and Grade 2.

We are very happy to announce we will shorty open our new school garden. It will be located behind the MPR building on the new yard area and will be available for students to learn about growing and taking care of plants, including vegtables we can eat! 

We are very happy to be running this project in collaboration with the environmental department of Kobe City and the American Chamber of Commerce Japan Kansai Community Service who will also be joining us to share how they will support our school on this Healthy Urban Gardening (HUG) project.

Carnival - Event

20th February

On Monday, February 20th, we are going to celebrate the German Carnival with all DSKI students! Carnival takes its origins from ancient European festivals, which were celebrated in Greece and Rome. During these festivities, there was a temporary release from social obligations and hierarchies to make way for the overthrow of order, joking and even debauchery. Still today, an important aspect of Carnival in Germany is making jokes about politics. 

Later on, Carnival became the last big festivity before the 40 days period of fasting, the Lent. In the area around Mainz in Germany, Carnival is named “Fastnacht” which means the “night before the fasting”. 

The highlight of Carnival is Rosenmontag (Rose Monday), with parades through the streets and celebrations in public squares. Carnival music is played and lots of candy thrown into the crowds. While we cannot mimic the festivities perfectly, we will have some child-friendly indoor activities with lots of fun, crafting, candy and even pinatas!

Students are encouraged to come to school dressed up on that day or they can change when they arrive at school. As there is no theme for the German Carnival, any costume is fine, but keep in mind that the students have to be able to follow their regular class schedules after the event (Students need to change for P.E.!) 

The school day will begin as usual at 8:30 a.m.

There will be an introduction to the German Carnival and a Polonaise dance through the school. To round off the celebration there will be games offered in the MPR  for Grades 1-6 and in Early Years for Pre-KG to Preschool. 

We are looking forward to the DSKI Carnival this year!

The early registration/ cutoff date to reach the minimum number of participants will be: Tuesday, February 7

Thank you to all who have signed up for student and parents clubs for the 2nd semester. So far we have a great turnout for many of the clubs, but there are still some that are in need of more members in order to reach the minimum number of four students. If they don’t reach the minimum, then we may have to cancel some of the offerings.

Families will be notified of cancelled clubs and will still have a chance to join another club.

Confirmation emails will be sent out next week between Wednesday and Friday, with clubs beginning the following week from Monday, February 13 - Friday, February 17.

January's Parent Cafe: Supporting Reading At Home
Wednesday 18th January at 9am in the STEM Room
At our Parent Cafe this month, we will be exploring a range of strategies that you can use at home to help your child to develop a love of reading. Whether your child is just beginning to read or is already reading with confidence, Mrs Harris will discuss ways that you can support your child with their reading at home. 

If you are not able to join the session in person, then the Parent Cafe will also be streamed over Zoom, so please feel free to join the session.
